There was a time when travelers found places to eat on their way to wherever they wanted to visit.
Nowadays, many restaurants have become destinations, especially if they’re recognized by the industry or offer a unique experience.
La Faena can be considered one of those restaurants.
The space is welcoming, cozy, big enough to accomodate nine tables.
It’s located in Guaynabo’s countryside, at Barrio Hato Nuevo, an area away from the city and close to the mountains.
This is where chef/owner Kevin García was born, where he grew up and where he started an agroecological project in 2016.
AgroCocina started as a huerto, thoughtfully growing fruits and vegetables used in Puerto Rican cooking while respecting the environment.
Slowly, it became a catering business for private events delivering a variety of creative dishes - made from scratch - with locally-sourced ingredients.
And in 2022, the farm-to-table project opened its doors as a restaurant combining sustainable agriculture, culinary skills, tradition and hospitality.
The menu can be described as criollo moderno, classic Puerto Rican recipes with a contemporary touch. The offerings change weekly or monthly, depending on what’s available to make sure ingredients are fresh and in season. It’s also inclusive, featuring options for vegetarians, vegans and omnivores.
For his efforts, Kevin García was nominated for a 2025 James Beard Award in the Best Chef: South category, raising his profile and what Puerto Rican cuisine can be.
Recognized by the industry. A unique experience. La Faena, a destination restaurant.
Hasta la próxima.
